
Brett was born and raised in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and graduated from Lawrenceburg High School in 2009. He enlisted in the Army in 2010 and completed basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was then stationed in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Brett deployed with the 25th ID to Kandahar, Afghanistan in March of 2011. Throughout his deployment he was tasked with running a minesweeper for his platoon.
On September 28, 2011, Brett stepped on a pressure-plate IED. He sustained multiple injuries, including bilateral amputations to his lower extremities, a fractured pelvis, fractures of both hands and arms, and other various injuries. He was then sent to Brooke Army Medical Center (currently known as San Antonio Military Medical Center) at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Brett spent nearly two years there learning how to adapt to his new life on prosthetics.
On November 5, 2011, a week after Brett was discharged from the hospital, he married his high school sweetheart, London. They have been happily married for almost 13 years. London, and Brett now have three children: two daughters and one son. Their daughter, Jacee, is 11 years old and in fifth grade. Julia is 8 years old and is in third grade. Their son, Jett, is 2 years old. Brett is currently serving his second term as a City Councilman in his hometown of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. He also runs a local community center basketball league and coaches various teams for their local school corporation. In Brett’s free time he enjoys playing golf and watching his kids compete in different sports throughout the various seasons.
